  2. AU demands end to NATO Libya strikes

    By Otto Bakano (AFP)

At the recent African Union summit in Ethiopia, many African leaders were upset at North Atlantic Treaty organisation (NATO)’s air raids against Libyan leader Kadhafi, saying that they were too violent. They thought that peace talks were a more appropriate and humane way to end the Libyan crisis. Other leaders, however, said that NATO helped maintain Libya’s peace and stability. They think that NATO’s air raids prevented massacres and even more bloodshed.

I think that the air raids should be continued, as long it does not cause any civilian injuries/deaths. They should just destroy Kadhafi’s weapons and the military buildings. On the other hand, peace talks are a better way to solve the problem. In the era that a single missile costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, NATO should stop burning taxpayers’ money on firepower. Moreover, air raids will put the lives of pilots and soldiers in danger. If the air raids do not succeed, NATO will be in big trouble and this will also boost the morale of the Kadhafi’s soldiers. I believe all the Libyan people will prefer negotiations instead of war.

Lockheed Martin hit by cyber attack
By AP writer Jennifer Malloy And lolIta C. baldor

Hackers launched a cyber attack on Lockheed Martin, a major defense contractor holding highly sensitive information, but its secrets remained safe, the company said Saturday.
Lockheed Martin, the Department of Homeland Security and the Pentagon confirmed that the contractor's information systems had come under attack.
Still, the concerted attempt to breach the contractor's systems underscored the risk to the nation's critical defense data. Chris Ortman, Homeland Security spokesman, said his agency and the Pentagon were working with the company to determine the breadth of the attack and "provide recommendations to mitigate further risk."
Lockheed Martin said in a statement that it detected the May 21 attack "almost immediately" and took countermeasures.Neither Lockheed Martin nor the federal agencies revealed specifics of the attack.
    Words learnt:compromise,Tenacious,Concerted,Countermeasures,Adverse
My views: I feel that companies and governments should have more countermeasures against hackers as stolen information could be used to cause hurt or undesirable effects.I hope blueprints for the weapons made by the Lockheed Martin does not fall into the hands of terrorists or dictatorships.

  4. Headlines: Vietnam on alert for smugglers after deadly snakes found on train
    By: Camilla Fuhr Nilsson
    From: http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/05/30/vietnam.snakes.on.train/index.html

On a train from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, four see-through cloth bags of extremely venomous cobras were found under a seat. They were found by a guard and conductor who were checking tickets as passengers got on the train. Panic overwhelmed hundreds of rail passengers as they fled the carriage. The reptiles were then handed over to Quang Ngai province's wildlife protection officers to be released into the wild.
Personally, I feel disgusted that people smuggle animals for its meat or any other part of it. For example in Vietnam, snakes were protected by law in Vietnam. To its contrary, Vietnamese consider snake meat a delicacy. A recent investigation by the Wildlife Conservation Society found 84% of restaurants in Da Lat were illegally selling wild animals. In a nutshell, I hope the animal smugglers would be found and punished by the law.

Headlines:CO2 emissions highest ever in 2010: IEA
    Repoter: Frederic J. Brown
Summary:Carbon dioxide given out in 2010 hit a high record last year, making the chances of limiting global warming to two degrees Celsius smaller. This increases risk of flooding, storms, rising sea levels and species extinction, etc. The carbon dioxide given out in 2010 is the highest record in the history so far. This record should be a warming to governments to provide better progress this year towards global solutions to climate change.

Even a little part can help as a lot of 'a lttle help' make a huge difference to the earth. We should not also have the thinking that the little things(that can do damage to the environment)we do will not cause damage to the earth as it is only a bit. If everyone have that thinking, we will do much damage to the earth. All in all, I felt that we all have a part in doing damage to the earth!

  7. Headlines:Dentist fined after pulling out wrong teeth

    By Liyana Low

-A clinic clerk at the National Dental Centre attached the chit for extracting two teeth into the wrong patient's file, leading to the wrong patient being called into the treatment room. That resulted in the patient's upper-left first premolar and the lower-left second premolar to be removed. The 23-year-old man was notified within an hour of the mistake. The dentist has since been censured and fined $3,000.

    - I feel such an incident could have been prevented if they were more careful in handling the folders. Pulling out your perfectly fine teeth is like cutting off your finger. They will never grow back. The dentists unfortunately were unable to fix the teeth back. I am sure that the patient suffered a great deal of pain and should be compensated fully.

    New words learnt:
    1. chit: a note
    2. censured:to criticize severely
    3. endodontist: the branch of dentistry that deals with diseases of the tooth root, dental pulp, and surrounding tissue
    4. redress: to make amends to
    5. framework: a structural plan or basis of a project

  8. Summary:
People are uploading photographs of others to 'shame' them. Then, they let netizens to comment on those photographs and give their own views. It seems that many Singaporeans love 'shaming' others. Lifestyle, the newspaper, interviewed 22 commuters and asked if they would shoot and shame others. Most of them felt that doing so was childish. Some thought that those 'selfish' people might have their reasons for doing so. Professor Straughan says that if you want to shame somebody, stand up and be named as well. This will ensure that those doing damaging posting will seek the facts before public exposure.

    My View:
I agree with what Professor Straughan says. If you dare the take pictures of someone and post it, you ought to own up too. However, I think that before you post something you must think twice. As what you post can be viewed by many people from all over the world. Moreover, you could be jumping to conclusions. For example, a woman who is in her twenties was sitting on a reserve seat in the MRT, even though there were many people who need the seat more. You take a photograph, and upload it for people to criticise her. What if she was not feeling well and felt like fainting? You would have blamed the woman wrongly. If I see someone doing something that I deem as ungracious, I will go forward to request for them to do what is appropriate.

His friends tried to save him but could not and he was missing for several hours before his dead body was found in the canal next to Block 82, Whampoa Drive.

My views:I felt that the authoriries should do something to stop floodings in areas like Bukit Timah and Balastier. Also, I felt that there should be taller guard rails or signs at both sides of the drain so as to warn people where the drain is.

U.S. teenager mistakenly killed by Costa Rica hotel guard.

    By:Alex Leff

Summary: A U.S. high school student was shot dead by a hotel security guard in Costa Rica on Thursday after being mistaken for a thief. Justin Johnston, sixteen, was shot in the chest in the early hours of Thursday as he tried to sneak back into his room, breaking a night curfew on a school trip. The guard shouted at Johnston and another schoolmate as they tried to enter their hotel room, prompting them to run and for the guard to fire.

My Views: I think the trigger-happy guard should just wound him instead of just killing him like that. Even if he was a thief, the guard should not take justice into his own hands and kill him. Although, I think that Justin Johnston should not be out wandering outside the hotel at night.

The Ministry of Health had warned all doctors and hospitals to look out for signs of the infections in patients. E. coil is normally a harmless bacteria in the intestines, but some of them now can cause severe diarrhea.
My view: I feel that what the ministry has done is needed as in any case, prevention is better than cure. It would be a case almost like H1N1 or SARS if the bacteria manage to slip into our country.

However, this teenager have only one left so what if the only kidney failed? His health will deteriorate drastically. I don't think that our health is only like worth $3800, it is priceless!

I hope that the police will track down the organ selling syndicate.

Headlines: Two arrested for bid to rob Burger King
    Reported by: Kimberly Spykerman

    Summary:
Two Filipino men had been arrested for their alleged involvement in armed robbery at Burger King at International Plaza on Wednesday.
Early on Wednesday morning, one of the suspects, a 32-year-old, allegedly walked into the Burger King Outlet at International Plaza and held a knife to a crew member's throat. His face covered with a surgical mask and an eye mask, he demanded that the outlet manager hand over all the money in a safe. The other man, a 30-year-old believed to be his accomplice, waited outside the building. The attempted was thwarted after a third crew member ran out to seek help from other shopkeepers.

    Good words/phrases learnt:
    ~ assailants: people who attack
    ~ alleged: supposed
    ~ a trail of clues
~ bold and audacious: brave an extremely daring
~ thwarted: prevent from accomplicing a purpose

    My views:
It is definitely errant of the 2 Filipino men to arm-rob Burger King. Fast money, not fast food, was on the mind of the two assailants. However, they did not think of the dire consequences. They could be charged with attempting to commit armed robbery, punishable by seven year's jail and no less than 18 strokes of the cane. No matter how much they need money, they should not resort to this unlawful acts. Instead, they should earn and save money without breaking the law. It might not be fast but it beats to committing a crime.

  15. Headlines: Nursing home not allowed to take in new patients
    Reporter: Evelyn Lam Li Ting

    Summary of newspaper article:
Two staffs at the Nightingale nursing home mistreated an elderly woman and a hidden camera owned by her relative shot the footage. After the relative had sent the video to MediaCorp, it alerted the Health Ministry and came to light. Hence, the Health Ministry suspended the nursing home to admit new patients.

    Good words/phrases learnt:
    - rendering: the act of doing something
    - implemented: carried out
    - ascertain: find out; discover; be certain
    - sanctions: permission; approve
    - audits: inspect; examine

    My views:
There should be tighter supervision of staffs taking care of the patients. Not only should the nursing home discipline the staffs involved strictly, they should also be sacked so that other staffs would not dare to follow them and mistreat other elderly patients. The Health Ministry should also monitor every nursing home closely so that they would know which nursing home did not meet the standard.

The robber shot two shots but the sound of the two shots wa not as loud as a real shot sound hence allowing others to suspect that it was a toy gun.

  19. Title: Jaywalker fined for causing cyclist's death
Reporter: Elena Chong and Carolyn Quek

    Summary:
A teenager, Xu Yuanyuan, aged 19, stepped onto the road without looking and caused the death of a cyclist, Mr Lock Wai Chee, aged 42. Mr Lock suffered head injuries after crashing into her and died 5 hours later in the hospital. Xu Yuanyuan was fined $1,500 for her act. She admitted to the police that the traffic signal was against her and the court heard that she "took a step forward" when the red man was showing, resulting in the collision. Mr Lock's bicycle's brakes were found to be faulty and ineffective. He was also not wearing a helmet when he was cycling.

    Good words/phrases learnt:
    -mandatory: obligatory, compulsory
-prosecution: (Law) the lawyers acting to put the case against a person.
-autopsy: Examination of a cadaver* to determine or confirm the cause of death.
    -sustained: To experience or suffer.
    -view was not obstructed
    -heavy fine to be imposed
    -negligent act to endanger life

    My views:
I feel that such an accident should not have happened. On one hand, the teenager, Xu Yuanyuan, should have looked before she crossed the road, and also should have watched out if the "red man" was showing. On the other hand, the cyclist, Mr Lock, should have actually maintained his bicycle and made sure it was in good condition. It was dangerous for him to cycle with faulty brakes and also without a helmet, which could have saved his life. Still, what's done is done and sadly, a life has been taken in this incident...a hefty price to pay indeed. As for Xu, she would have to live with the guilt of causing someone's death, for the rest of her life.

    Summary:
A 28-year-old housewife had 4 children but 2 of them died. The second child, 3 months old, was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead on March 2008. The cause of the death was broncho-pneumonia following head injury. The third child was taken to the hospital on July 31 2009. The mother said the baby had high fever on 30 July but it was too late at night so she did not take her to the doctor. She also performed CPR on her, but performed wrongly as she only neede to use 2 fingers. She thought that this was the reason the baby's ribs had broken, but the injuries were old injuries. The baby had non-accidental injuries, like swelling on the left side of the brain, bleeding in both eyes, liver lacerations and a possible broken right leg. The mother confirmed that she had hit the baby before, and that she explained, she was not in the right mood. The baby died on October 2009. The mother was founf to have post-natal depression by the Institute of Mental Health.

    -colic
    -gag order
    -pathologist

    My views:
The mother should be responsible and not give birth to so many children, if she knew that she could not stand noises like a baby crying. She should also take the baby to the hospital immediately, not do CPR(which she did wrongly)on the baby.

    By:Agence France-Presse

A Singapore animal welfare group had launched a campaign to urge a casino and leisure complex to free 25 dolphins destined for a new marine park attraction. Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) bought the mammals for an "interactive dolphin spa programme" where visitors can interact them. The dolphins are now residing in the Philippines, being cared for by a team of veterinarians, and would be moved to Singapore only when the facility was ready.
ACRES said RWS bought dolphins from the Solomon Islands and two had died during training in the Philippines. They said the two dolphins died from a bacterial infection which affects the mammals in the wild, and not from training.

The Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) on Friday launched a campaign to urge Resorts World Sentosa to free its 25 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins bought for an "interactive dolphin spa programme" at its Marine Life Park, where visitors can interact with the animals.
"We hope that RWS will make a socially responsible decision and free the dolphins," said Louis Ng, executive director of ACRES, who issued the appeal at the launch of a campaign called "Save the World's Saddest Dolphins" to raise public awareness through songs and videos on the website www.saddestdolphins.com.
RWS said the dolphins are now residing in the Philippines, being cared for by a team of veterinarians, and would be moved to Singapore only when the facility was ready. Two out of the 27 dolphins had died during training in the Philippines. RWS said the two dolphins died from a bacterial infection which also affects the mammals in the wild, and not from training.

    Good phrases/words:
    -destined for
    -issued the appeal
    -a superior diet
    -a socially responsible decision

    My views:
I think that RWS should free the 25 dolphins as I believe that the dolphins do not like to be captured and trained. Dolphins, like humans, have feelings too. RWS is using animals from the wild to earn lots of money and I think that they are very selfish by not having a thought for the dophins' feelings.

  26. From: The Sunday Times Title: It's Death Penalty in China By AFP, REUTERS and Xinhua BEIJING-Food safety crimes that result in deaths will now earn manufacturers a death sentence as China's top court ordered. This extreme measure was taken as a bid to regain public confidence as well as to stem international concern over its food products, which could affect China's billion-dollar exports. Experts have also noted that with China becoming the world's largest exporter, its food problems have become the world's problems. China had earlier this year eliminated capital punishment for some economic crimes as part of moves to curb use of the death penalty. However, the food scares seemed to have prompted harsher penalties, especially as these food crimes continued despite the government's promises to clean up the food industry after the 2008 milk scandal. Phrases learnt: -capital punishment: death penalty -dereliction: willful neglect, as of duty or principle -agricultural: the art of cultivating soil and producing crops -logged: recorded -aftermath: a consequence (of a disaster) -crackdown: an act of forceful regulation -probation: a period in which a person's work ability is tested -blighted: an object in a deleterious state Opinions: I think that the manufacturers of the tainted food products are very irresponsible and greedy. They only do this for the sake of saving costs to make the food look good. There have been reports of melamine in milk, bleach in rice noodles, drugs in pork and many more of these scandals. Well, at least the Chinese government is doing something to counter this by imposing heavy penalties as this can discourage manufacturers from performing these thoughtless acts. Of course it will take some time for this malicious act to cease completely, but i feel that it is, though, somewhat effective. I really hope that these kind of things will stop so as not to bring harm to us and also to our future generations. Done by Kenneth Sugiarto

  27. Title:Maid who buried newborn suffered depression
    Reported by: Khushwant Singh
    URL:http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_678382.html
Summary: Retiree Tan Kim Sia found an infant on 11 April when he went our for a smoke. The infant's mouth was stuffed with mud and dried leaves and had his umbilical cord still attached.
The infant's mother,Idriani, who suffers from a depressive disorder, was later jailed 6 weeks for child abandonment. Then, district court heard that Idriani came to Singapore to work as a maid last year. After 4 months, she ran away and to earn money, she prostituted herself in Geylang. Last October, she found out that she was pregnant and did not know who the father was.
    Good words/phrases I learnt:
    - Sought refuge
    - Deemed
    - Overstayer
    - Remand
My view: I think that people who are like Idriani should be immediately treated by a psychiatrist. If not, there might be more people who suffers from depression dumping or even killing their babies ( if it is the same case )
or they might even kill their family members. In my opinion, I think that Idriani also shouldn't run away and be a prostitute. She was just makinig her life more miserable. If she is depressed and she cannot control herself, she should seek a doctor instead. And if not for Mr Tay Kim Sia, I believe the infant would be dead by now and an innocent baby would be gone. So I hope that there would be fewer cases like these where someone gets depressed and risking other innocent people's lives.

You would have blamed the poor woman wrongly. If I see someone doing something that I deem as ungracious, I will go forward to request for them to do what is appropriate.

  29. Headline: Manila to send World War II warship into disputed area

    (No reporter stated)

Summary: With tensions rising over territorial disputes in the South China Sea, the Philippines said yesterday it will send its biggest warship, a World War II vessel, to the area after China deployed one of its largest civilian maritime patrol ships. Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has also issued a decree about a potential military call-up if war broke out. Meanwhile, apart form deploying a patrol vessel, China said it will boost its coastal forces.

    Good words/phrases learnt:

    -tension rising

    -pushed around

    -archipelagos

    -overlapping territorial claims

My view: Although concerning countries are claiming the ownership of South China Sea, there is no point to start a war. We don’t want a vicious war that will kill many just over several pieces of land, do we? I think the countries should put down their deadly weapons and negotiate instead.
